2014 Year End Ministry Report from Pastor Henoc Lucien
God is at work in Haiti! His Spirit is moving in the hearts of people and many are transformed!
Recently, I spent some time with an 82 year old man who had been a Free Mason for most of his life. Several of us from the church in Cap shared the Gospel with him and he trusted Christ as his Savior. Three weeks later, this man died of a stroke. We, as leaders of the Cap church, did his funeral. It was a joy to know that through the ministry in the city, this man inherited eternal life and is living now in the presence of Christ!
College Susan Schuenke (CSS)
We are thankful for your prayers and expressions of Christian love through your scholarship support of students in our Pre-K-13th grade Christian school. This year there are nearly 800 students enrolled at CSS. The students come from towns like Pignon, Grande Riviere du Nord, Dondon, Milot, St Raphael, Limbe, Ouanaminthe and other suburbs of Cap-Haitien because they believe this is the best place to get training in order to be successful in life. CSS students consistently score well in exams given by the Ministry of Education and our graduates study successfully in Universities around the world proving that they are capable of achieving success. Bernina Oretienne, age five, was the very first student to enroll at CSS in September 2002-the year the school started. This year, she received the highest score in the official exam given to 12th graders. She is one of the candidates to become the president of the student body for this school year. Bernina is also a member of the Cap Haitian church where she has attended since she was 3 months old. As a pastor, I take pride in the development of this beautiful 17 year old girl who is a vibrant testimony for our Lord. Bernina’s academic success is due in part to a family in the U.S. who has paid the $330 fee for her school tuition every year. We have many students just like Bernina who desperately need financial help so that they are able to continue to receive a solid Christian education that will change the path of the future for them and for Haiti. In fact, the shortage of scholarship donors has had a heavy impact on the overall financial state of Vision of Hope Ministries. Please take the time to prayerfully read VOHM President Greg Schuenke’s financial report included with this mailing for more details. There are so many promising young Haitian students who need scholarship assistance.
The Cap-Haitien Church
The church in Cap-Haitien continues to develop. Many people are coming to the Lord and are getting involved. This year we baptized over 50 people on the last Sunday of May. We are presently having a baptism class that prepares many more for baptism in December. Our cell groups continue to grow. Every Monday evening at 5:00 we have over 300 who attend these different cell groups. It seems like people are hungry for the knowledge of the Word. The evening services during the week are full and we meet in the yard of the school. The leadership of the church is excited about what the Lord is doing in our midst. Our greatest challenge is to develop more leaders to nurture such a large group of people. Please pray for our continued unity and spiritual strength as we are moving on. We are also thankful that the Lord has allowed us to purchase a piece of property in the back of the school which will be the future site of a sanctuary. PTL
The City of Cap-Haitien
Much development has happened in the city of Cap-Haitien. The people are excited that for the first time in history, American Airlines has a daily flight to Cap Haitien. It used to be that we had to drive or fly to Port au Prince or Dominican Republic in order to travel to the United States. The airport has been rebuilt and it looks very nice. With a new airstrip that can allow large airplanes to land, AA has been coming since October 2nd. There is also talk about other airlines to follow. This development will help in the accommodation of short term mission teams to Northern Haiti. It used to be that we had to go pick the groups in Port au Prince or Santiago. Now, everyone will fly directly to Cap. Praise the Lord!
The Churches in Berard
We are working with two churches in the area of Berard. The Evangelical Free Church of Berard is the first congregation we founded when we moved to that area. It met for a few years in our yard until the Lord provided a building. Pastor Sainsoir and Pastor Jude are the leaders of that congregation. Having worked with this congregation for several years, we have seen how it has transformed the whole community. Through the Berard church, many young people have completed their education at CSS. Our solar powered pumping and purification system continues to provide free clean and safe drinking water to the whole community. Several of the church members are involved in the Microenterprise project that our ministry is involved with. So, the whole sphere of people's lives is being changed. Two miles north of the Berard church, we also lead the Hope Evangelical Church of Brossard. Mackency Hilaire is the pastor of that congregation.
The Church in Grande Riviere du Nord
This year, there is a lot of excitement over the fact that the congregation of Grande Riviere moved into their own building. Last fall, we were asked to leave the building where we have been meeting since the foundation of the church. We are thankful for the MIM group who has done much work for the past serveral years on the new church and this year came from Chicago to put a roof on the building for us. We have been working on finishing the interior. Although much work remains to be done, we are enjoying it and are thankful to the Lord for His provision.
There are sixteen orphans living with house parents in the orphanage next to my house in Berard. The two oldest ones will graduate from high school in May and will move on to University. That was the kind of development we expected in 2008 when we picked them up in Gonaives. We hoped we could give each child a chance to be educated and to be useful for themselves and become leaders in the society whether they return to Gonaives or wherever God would have them. It is a joy to be raising a group of God-fearing leaders who will make an impact on the country of Haiti. However, the monthly financial support of these orphans has made a deep impact on the overall financial picture of VOHM. It costs $93.75 per child per month to fully support these children. Please see VOHM President Greg Schuenke’s financial report for more information.
For the leadership development in all four churches.
For our family’s spiritual strength in the midst of a very busy schedule.
For our boys to grow up as God fearing young men.
For the funds to continue all God has called us to do in Haiti.
As we quickly approach the end of 2014 and the holidays ahead of us, let me take this chance to thank each and every one of you who has prayed, shared, visited, and given to the ministry of Vision of Hope Ministries in Haiti. It is your support that encourages us as we daily do this work for God’s kingdom. Greetings to you all from the brothers and sisters in Christ in Haiti! May God be near in your hearts in the days to come. Happy and blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas to you all.
